Madrid, one of Europe’s most vibrant capitals, is a perfect fusion of tradition and modernity. With a past rich in history, art and culture, it has adapted to the times and embraced innovation. Today, Madrid is a 21st century metropolis: its nightlife, modern restaurants and cultural offerings invite you to discover and experiment.
My artistic proposal for AVANI Alonso Martínez is a tribute to Madrid, my hometown and the city where I have lived most of my life.
In this series of works I explore the most representative elements: traditions, art, its mythical Metro network and its culture. A retro-futuristic journey in which I mix epochs with subtlety and imagination: from its most colourful past to an imagined future, passing through a diversity of visual styles and techniques.
ELEVATORS
MADRID’S UNDERGROUND
The Madrid Metro was one of the first in the world to be built (the first being London’s), and is an icon of the metropolis.
In a hotel that pays tribute to the city of Madrid, a reference to its mythical Metro network could not be missing. This series of 7 works of art is inspired by the city’s underground transport network and recreates a journey through time and the history of the Metro.
Each work is contextualised in a modern Madrid Metro station, in the centre of which lies a sphere or bubble containing a shot of the old, now converted into a museum, Chamberí station (the most iconic station of all time).
This superimposition of the past against the present generates a journey through time using the urban aesthetics of the underground transport network as a context.
INSPIRATION
Part of the inspiration for this project comes from the work of the artist Richard Estes and his representation of urban landscapes and contexts in which metallic and chrome surfaces extol an idealisation of the urban and subterranean landscape. Translated to the idiosyncrasies of Spain, I wanted to express my fascination for my hometown through this homage to one of its great visual icons.
