Art in the context of an interior design project
When creating works of art for interior design projects, the aesthetics or beauty of the artwork are not the only determining factors when deciding on the suitability of the artwork. The artwork must fit harmoniously into the overall interior design concept of the project. This art is created on purpose and therefore the artist always takes into account the idiosyncrasies of the spaces, their aesthetics, the colour palettes used, the special architectural elements and the meaning behind the interior design concept that is being applied to the space and works accordingly on the basis of guidelines. Once these guidelines have been overcome, there is freedom to create.
The art pieces accompanying this article were created for a hotel interior design project but were subsequently discarded due to changes in the interior design. Although the art created is attractive, impactful and has meaning relative to the concept around which the hotel revolved, the pieces do not always fit into the visual puzzle of an interior design project. These situations are part of the vicissitudes associated with being an artist who is part of something bigger, a creator who works alongside a large team and whose vision must always align with that team.
As an artist, as a creator, I feel comfortable in this role, and I adapt naturally to its ups and downs. I think it is exciting to be part of projects that transcend artistic contemplation, projects that become experiences, that people can feel, live in, feel that they are ‘inside them’, that they are part of them. Art merged with interior design overcomes the barriers of the art gallery to join the spectator without prejudice and break the invisible line that separates art from architecture and art from interior design.
Expanding the Vision: The Symphony of Art and Space
Creating art for interior spaces goes beyond simple decoration; it is a careful choreography that balances aesthetics, functionality and the psychology of the space. The choice of each piece involves a deep understanding of how colours, shapes and textures interact not only with each other, but also with the architectural elements and the natural or artificial light of the space. This understanding ensures that the art not only complements the interior design, but also enhances the spatial experience for those who inhabit it.
Creative Collaboration: Artists and Interior Designers
The success of integrating art into interior design often lies in the collaboration between the artist and the interior designers or architects. This synergy allows both sides to bring their unique vision to the project, fusing art and design so that every element within the space speaks the same visual language. Through this collaboration, it ensures that the art is not just a final addition, but an integral component of the design concept from the beginning.
The Impact of Art on Spatial Experience
Art has the power to transform an ordinary space into an extraordinary experience. It is not just a matter of aesthetics; it is also a powerful tool for evoking emotions, telling stories and creating a sense of place. In the context of a hotel, for example, art can transport guests to another era, invoke the tranquillity of nature, or simply provoke joy and wonder. In doing so, art enriches the user experience, making each stay memorable and unique.
In conclusion, integrating art into interior design projects is a complex and collaborative process that goes far beyond aesthetics. It requires a deep understanding of space, close collaboration between artists and designers, and a shared vision to create environments that are not only visually stunning, but also resonate emotionally with those who experience them. As an artist, being part of this process is an exciting and rewarding journey, one that allows art to transcend traditional boundaries and become a living part of our everyday lives.
